Have you been to Santa Fe? It's really quite a place. The Georgia O'Keefe sky is huge, the food is flavorful and the art galleries run the length of the infamous "Canyon Road". Each year, I prepare a new body of work for Hunter Kirkland Contemporary. My annual show this year is set for September 10. Last year I exhibited with a very colorful landscape painter. Our work complimented each other so well that we are doing it again this year. It will be a colorful show as I have new work carved from Mexican Fluorite, Italian Alabaster, Italian Marble, Utah Rhyolite, Utah Calcite and Iranian Onyx. I've been showing my work in Santa Fe since 1989. It is always a pleasure to be there. There's just something about that big sky that allows you to take it all in. Ok, now I gotta get back to the studio.

Anyone Out There?

Have you seen that movie "Julie & Julia"? I found it inspiring because I love to cook but also because of the concept of the blog. I've tried to be consistent with my blog this year, typically on a weekly basis. And, like Julie in the movie, I'm wondering is there anyone out there? I admired her passion for cooking and writing as it guided her through the year just as stone drives me 365 days a year. It is all about passion and prioritizing your time. Maybe blogging, like keeping a journal, is a good exercise to keep our minds focused. At this point in my career, I've been sculpting for 30 years. I still wake up in the night with new ideas. I see evolving shapes in blocks of stone. I am always researching different types of stone worldwide. It's this passion, dedication and persistence that give me and my work purpose. Anyone Out There? Are you pursuing your passion?

How Does He Do That?

"How does he do that?" I've been working on a new statement that defines what drives me to create my signature design, the mobius. My designs are reminiscent of Celtic Knots and The Mobius Strip but mine have volume, twists and turns and usually more than one edge. The definition for Celtic Knots: a variety of, mostly endless, knots and stylized graphical representations of knots used for decoration, adopted by the ancient Celts. The Mobius Strip: a continuous loop with one surface and one edge formed by twisting the end of a long, thin rectangular strip 180 degrees and attaching the ends. My "T Barny Mobius Sculpture" is a marriage of these two ideas: design and continuity.
My forty year fascination with the simple mobius strip was introduced to me in the third grade. It continues to inspire me to create complex continuous forms from stone. It is my intent to express a statement of oneness. We are all connected to each other, to the earth and to the universe around us.

THE BRONZE "GEM" COLLECTION
Above is a great look at my sculpture titled ELARA. This picture shows the 3 gem colored patinas of Jade, Sapphire & Ruby. ELARA is an Edition of 25 and measures 17in.x 11in.x 5in. The title means 'Moon of Jupiter'.
My bronzes don't come from clay or wax molds. They come from my original sculpture. It gives the bronzes more integrity. Here is something I hand carved now immortalized in bronze. Stone and wood have some flexibility in their essence. Bronze, however, is the most stubborn material. Using the "lost wax" process, I ask the bronze to transform itself into a T Barny Sculpture. Even the patina preserves the essence of the stone through the patterns I achieve. It is a joy to see my work captured into a new bronze identity.
