Surface Transition

T BARNY SCULPTURE
When I could see my breath in the cold studio today I knew it was time to use my little propane heater! I've been working on this "pointed style" design lately. It's all about "Surface Transition" - I take a little off here and a little off there, look at it and then take a little off here and a little off there. Then look at it again. It's not like bending paper; it's 3-dimensional. From edge to edge, I need to be aware of how it flows. These new designs still have my classic curvilinear approach but with a directional evolution going on throughout the piece. The piece above is titled, "SESTET" which means the 'Last 6 Lines in a Sonnet'. It measures 20"H x 13"W x 7"L. I carved it from a block of Picasso Marble. Enjoy it online or picture it in your home or office.

How Cool Is That?

T BARNY SCULPTURE NEWS
Technology - Gotta Love It! As of this morning, I now have video on my blog. Check it out above. Pretty Cool!
Recent ARTrails guests also thought this was a pretty cool sculpture. They were mostly attracted to the smooth, finished surface of the stone and the surprise of the raw edge. This piece is titled BREACH which means 'Rend'. It stands 19"tall x 13"wide and 5"deep. It is available here at the studio for $4000. I carved it from a block of Utah Calcite. You can see the white at the edge; that is what the outside of the block looks like. You don't know what you'll find until you carve into it. How cool is that?

Director's Choice

T BARNY SCULPTURE NEWS
Did you come out for ARTrails? The last day was a rainy one but my most well attended. Rain or shine, it was a great group of people who came to see me, my sculpture and where I work. Now as I shift gears, I prepare for an invitational show in St. Helena at the Ira Wolk Gallery. This "Director's Choice" Show will be up November through December. I'm sending them pictures of new work for them to review and they will choose 3 pieces for this special exhibit. Above is one of my favorite new pieces. The title "DUODENARY" means 'Twelve'. There are 12 points to the pieces while at the same time still holding my curvilinear style. The stone is Brucite Marble with has green streaks through the black and grey texture. It also has an area of "Fool's Gold" in it. This piece measures 18in.x 13in.x 7in. Check out other new work at: http://www.tbarny.com
Enjoy Fall and HaPpY HaLLoWeeN to all of you.

October 9-10 & 16-17, 10am - 5pm Daily
Did you know that it is ARTrails 25th Anniversary? I was one of the artists who helped coordinate the very first ARTrails. As I flashback to 1985, I remember a group of us artists were looking for a way to get the public to our studios. It was a big year for me as that is when my 20' x 20' studio space was built. I invite you to come on out and see my studio now, hear ARTrails stories and see my new bronze "Gem" Collection.
I just finished 6 more new pieces for this first ARTrails weekend. Four of them are carved from Utah Calcite like the one shown above. It is always a favorite stone and glows in the sunlight. The other two are carved from Picasso Marble and Brucite. They are more directional in design. I've let the stone tell me what it wants to do by drilling it first and then through the transition of veining and texture, I carve the design into pointed curves. Typically, I have a preconceived idea of the design. These two new pieces are completed through this transition process of letting it flow from the rock.
I hope to see you this weekend or next. Cheers to ARTrails!
